In March 2016 Clonakilla opened its new cellar door. Set adjacent to the ever-expanding winery, the upscale building was constructed using local stone and reclaimed timber. It’s a breathtaking structure and a formidable setting for tasting Clonakilla’s renowned wines. The light-drenched interiors overlook the adjoining vineyard, and the tasting bar, constructed from reappointed wine barrels, offers a seriously upmarket experience with its fine stemware and professional staff. Bringing the room together is an open fireplace framed by a stone wall, a charming addition that urges tasters to stay, particularly on those cooler days in the region. The charming, old school cellar door may have been a favourite for those visiting Canberra District, but the new face of Clonakilla’s winemaking is appropriately sophisticated, and perhaps overdue in terms of upgrade. This is a benchmark cellar door from Clonakilla, and one honed through vigneron Tim Kirk’s unswerving vision to elevate the offering for not only his wines, but the region.
